John Young was a successful Halifax businessman, author, and politician. Born in Falkirk, Scotland, in 1773 to Janet and William Young, he was educated at the University of Glasgow around 1790. Young performed well in his theological studies at the university but decided not to become a Presbyterian Minister as his family had hoped.
